Galaxy Slayer Zed

Happy to show my work on Galaxy Slayer Zed! This project involved a fun combination of using hand-crafted transition/alpha erosion maps to create 2D animated looking effects. To make the effects look full, and not flat, I added other voluminous elements to fill the negative spaces of the 2D elements. It was a pleasure working with the following talented individuals! (Special thanks to David Hall for his awesome explorations with how transition/erosion maps function in our proprietary VFX engine!)

Zed's ultimate ability. This demonstrates using transition maps to create 2D, hand-animated looking effects, coupled with filler 3D effects.

Hand-animated (flipbook/2D) effects run the risk of looking flat in a 3D game environment space.

Here is one transition/erosion map I used. You will see the .gif turn white as I add a threshold adjustment layer, and scrub through the values with the slider. Threshold adjustment layers are an awesome way to see how transition maps will work.
